Notse – In Trance
Agbogboza Festival is taking part in the small town of Notse, southern Togo, Every year on the month of September.
It is the most important ceremony for the Ewe Ethnic group.
The Ewe are divided between Togo and Ghana (with few communities in Benin). The Festival is commemorating an event in the history, when a cruel king ruled over his people in Notse. He ordered them to build a long, high, thick mud wall, and he killed the old wise men of the tribe. The women saved the people: they decided to pour all the laundry water in one spot by the wall, and after sometime managed to make a small hole and to escape the cruel king.
The Agbogboza also symbolized the beginning of the new year.
