Ouidah – Unique way to produce Salt
Ouidah is a small town in Benin that was known in the (dark) history as a center for exporting slaves. a shallow lagoon is separating the town from the sea.
The lagoon is where the local women produce salt in a very unique way: They a building baskets from the mangroves (local vegetation) branches. They fill the baskets with sand, not before they insert a small pipe in bottom of the basket.
Now they collect water (which are saltier then sea water) from the lagoon, and pour it on the sand filled basket. the water are washing the salty sand and drained through the pipe into a bowl. The woman repeat the same again and again till she is satisfied with the level of salt in the water.
Now, she cook the very salty water till water evaporate and the salt is ready for sale!
